Series Screening of Tsai Ming-liang
Date:
April 10 - April 26, 2015

Description:
Born to a Chinese family in Malaysia, Tsai Ming-liang came to Taiwan during the flowering of the film industry’s New Wave and, standing on the shoulders of the groundbreaking directors Edward Yang and Hou Hsiao-hsien, became the defining artist of the country’s Second Wave. Distinguished by deadpan humor, an intimate acquaintance with despair and isolation, and a minutely controlled mise-en-scene in which the smallest gestures give off enormous reverberations, Tsai’s films comprise one of the most distinctive and monumental bodies of work of the past 25 years.

Location:
Museum of Moving Image
36-01 35 Ave, Astoria, NY 11106

So if China’s going to be the capital of the 21st Century, what does it mean to leave this new metropole or come back? Photographer Alan Chin and writers Suzanne Ma and Val Wang touch upon what it means to immigrate from China and what it means to return--in a time when 50 million Chinese live overseas, and when more people migrate within China than anywhere else in history.
