Hyobin Kwon: Blue and White Impressions

Specializing in Asian calligraphy and brush paintings, Korean artist Hyobin Kwon became the first foreigner to obtain a doctorate in Chinese bird and flower brush painting in the art history of China.

During her studies, she conducted in-depth research on Qing Hua, the blue and white porcelain decoration from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Looking at the divisions of historical periods of blue and white porcelain, Kwon found that the patterns on the porcelain works developed in step with the styles of painting of the time.

Therefore, Kwon decided to combine the traditional arts of ceramics and painting together in her own practice. In her recent solo show “blue and white impressions”, Kwon takes fragments of ceramics and pairs them with her paintings that have similar patterns…
